• notes: Drake and Shaw & Shoemaker report two variants of this title, one before the death of Samuel Pleasants on October 4th (1814.053), and one immediately after (this item); that assessment was based on advertising in in the Virginia Argus; several such notices antedate Pleasants's death, indicating a publication before that event, while others report availability of this title after the fact; this title is presumed to be that post-mortem edition as imprint no longer employs the usual phrase "Printed and sold by Samuel Pleasants" but rather "Printed and sold at the Argus Office." No copy of the earlier edition is known extant.
  Following the death of Samuel Pleasants, the Argus office and press was conducted jointly by his widow, Deborah, and his son, Samuel Madison, with the aid of that concern's extensive staff; so the attribution here.
