Wharton was then a Culpeper County physician and surgeon who was induced by friends to publish this collection of his original poetry. Remarkably, the eight-page subscriber list at end of text [97-105], includes just three Virginia printer-booksellers: publisher Foster and the Petersburg tradesmen Edward Pescud and Samuel Dilworth.
