• notes: In February 1808, after two decades of sporadic discussion, the General Assembly authorized publication of the colonial-era laws of Virginia in a series of volumes edited by William Waller Hening, then clerk of the High Court of Chancery; the project ran to 13 volumes, covering the statutes enacted from 1619 to 1792; however, Hening was only allowed to charge the state for one volume per year, and as a result of financial issues, unexpected changes in printers, and lost certification documents, it took 15 years to complete the project: volume I issued in January 1810 (1809.034), volume II in January 1811 (1810.092), volume III in February 1813 (1812.108), volume IV in 1816 (this item), volumes V & VI in 1819 (1819.040 & 1819.041), volume VII in 1820 (1820.043), volumes VIII & IX in 1821; volume X in 1821, and finally volumes XI, XII & XIII in 1823.
  This volume was in press when Hening's original printer, Samuel Pleasants, died on October 4, 1814; title page carries still his imprimatur, making it one of the last imprints carrying his name; after his untimely death, however, this volume was held out of distribution while his estate was settled,, and then it was delayed further by the loss of the required certification forms in the dissolution of his office in 1815; so this volume did not actually issue until 1816, meaning that Hening was not paid for his work until then as well, which unsettled funding for the entire project; it would be another three years before volume V appeared.
  The Early American Imprints Series filmed the first six volumes under the entry number used by Shaw & Shoemaker for volume I (19121).
