• notes: Wells was charged with the unprovoked shooting of both Randolph and Greenhill in April 1816; he was acquitted of both charges when testimony proved that the well-armed pair had entered Wells's home uninvited with the intention of chastising him for publishing a letter that was highly critical of Randolph's conduct after having been appointed to the court.
  Introductory note [p. 7-8] is signed "Petersburg, 25th November, 1816. A.B.S." leading to the identification of Spooner as reporter of these two cases; Dunnavant entered a copyright for the work on October 29, 1816.
