- imprint_number: 1817.092
- title: The lives of Sir Walter Raleigh and Capt. John Smith; with an account of the governors of Virginia to the year 1781. By a Virginian.
- sequence_number: 92
- year: 1817
- place_issued: Shepherdstown
- issuing_press: Maxwell & Harper
- author: A Virginian.
- notes: Introductory statement [p. 2], dated "Jefferson County, Va. October 1817," reports that this local work was a condensed treatment of Raleigh's and Smith's lives designed for the use of readers lacking the time for reading more voluminous and scholarly biographies of the pair.
Shortly before this title issued, the firm of Maxwell & Harper acquired the Shepherdstown press of John N. Snider; that partnership was likely one between a local financier named Maxwell and the Chambersburg printer Kenton Harper, son of George Kenton Harper (1778-1858), who had also been Snider's master and mentor; but with the frequency of the Harper and Maxwell surnames in the American print trade, a definite identification of either partner is impracticable without further evidence.
