• notes: An addendum to his Address to Freeholders of Congressional District 6 (1817.105), now lost; this title was issued near end of Assembly session that met from November 11, 1816, to February 22, 1817; previously Smyth announced his intention to seek an open congressional seat created by the retirement of Federalist congressman Daniel Sheffey (1770-1830) in a letter to his Wythe County constituents (1816.128); in the two ensuing letters, he addressed voters in the larger district he hoped to represent in Congress, which included Wythe;, Smyth defeated Federalist Benjamin Estill (1780-1853) in that subsequent election by a 2-1 margin and represented the 6th Virginia Congressional District until 1825, then again from 1827 until his death.
