Petition seeking Canal on South Side of James River near Manchester.
- imprint_number: 1817.113
- title: To the speakers and members of both houses of the Virginia legislature. The petition of sundry inhabitants of the [blank] respectfully sheweth, that all the country above the falls contiguous to James River, is greatly interested in the establishment of a canal on the south side thereof ...
- sequence_number: 113
- year: 1817
- place_issued: Richmond
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Inhabitants of Chesterfield County & Manchester.
- notes: Only known copy, held in the state archives at the Library of Virginia, is dated in manuscript on December 11, 1817, the date it was received by the House; petitioners wrote in support of a plan to build a canal on the Manchester side of the James River; petition text duplicates that seen in a similar request made of the November 1816 Assembly (1816.147), though the typography differs; after being denied in that session, this Assembly granted the request (Chap. LXIV of Acts of December 1817 Assembly) as patience with slow progress of the James River Company in circumventing the falls of the James at Richmond and Manchester waned.
Sheet lacks colophon; context clearly indicates a Richmond origin; however, the multiplicity of presses operating there then make an attribution impracticable without further evidence, so the indeterminacy here.
