Petition seeking Regulation of Gill Nets on the Potomac River.
- imprint_number: 1817.116
- title: To the Legislature ... memorial of the ... proprietors and occupiers of fisheries on the river Potomac ... have sustained much injury from tide or gill nets ...
- sequence_number: 116
- year: 1817
- place_issued: Virginia
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Proprietors & Occupiers of Fisheries on the Potomac River.
- notes: Like petitions emanated from all of the Virginia counties in the Potomac Valley; however, as the river was a border with Maryland, the Assembly deferred from unilaterally mandating a set of regulations to redress the petitioners' grievances, as requested.
Only known copy, held in the state archives at the Library of Virginia, lacks colophon; sheet is dated December 20, 1817, in manuscript, the date it was received by the House of Delegates; several counties entered petitions on that day, so leaving it unclear which one of them was the item recorded by Hummel; the locus of this request indicates this item originated from a press in Alexandria, Leesburg, or Shepherdstown, so the indeterminacy reported here.
