Open Letter to the Roman Catholics of Norfolk.
- imprint_number: 1818.085
- title: To the Roman Catholics of Norfolk. The present trustees, fearful of a confusion similar to that which happened in the assembly of the 20th, will prevent them (in the one advertised for this day) to inform the assistants of their former proceedings, as well of the wrong plans you are to adopt, beg leave to offer to your prudent and calm reflections the following observa-tions ... By order of the trustees, A. Oliveira, sec'y. Norfolk, Thursday, 25th June, 1818.
- sequence_number: 85
- year: 1818
- place_issued: Norfolk
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Oliveira Fernandez, J. A.
- notes: Title was issued as part of ongoing controversy over attempts by the Bishop of Baltimore to name priests to American Catholic parishes, rather than being elected by the congregation there, as in Protestant churches, a right that the Norfolk parish was then asserting.
Sheet lacks colophon; items about the so-called "Norfolk Schism" recorded in Bibliographia Catholica Americana (1872), show that the press of O'Connor & Broughton was the source of titles issued by the Norfolk dissidents, while that of Shields, Charlton, & Co. issued those published by officials of the Catholic Church in America; hence, the attribution here.
