• notes: One of two petition efforts presented to the Assembly to help redirect trade on the Roanoke River away from the problematic ports of Albemarle Sound in North Carolina to Petersburg; this was received by the House on December 16, 1818; the other the next day (1818.131).
  As noted in the House journal, these petitioners asked "that a company be incorporated for opening a turnpike road, from Petersburg, in the general direction along the stage roads to the State of North Carolina, near Roanoke river; and an additional one, leading to some desirable station above, on the same river." The Assembly agreed to this request with a law enacted February 5, 1819 (Chap. LXXVI of the Acts of the December 1818 Assembly).
  Sheet lacks colophon; given the petitioners' intent, and that the resulting law incorporated the "Petersburg Turnpike Company," this title undoubtedly issued there; but the multiplicity of presses there makes assigning this to any one of them speculative, so the indeterminacy reported here.
