- imprint_number: 1819.098
- title: Jonathan Zane, complainant, vs. Noah & Daniel Zane, Defts. In Chancery. Upon appeal by the defendants from a decree of the superior court of chancery at Clarksburgh. …
- sequence_number: 98
- year: 1819
- place_issued: Virginia
- issuing_press: Uncertain
- author: Virginia. Supreme Court of Appeals.
- notes: Case was an appeal by the heirs of Ebenezer Zane to a chancery-court decision that denied their claim to land originally settled by Zane on Wheeling Island in the Ohio River, and which the first Zane later transferred to Jonathan Zane; as complainant, he had brought suit in 1815 to force Zane's heirs to relinquish title to the tract; they appealed when the Clarksburg court found in favor of the complainant/purchaser; the appellate court upheld the original decision on October 25, 1819, leading to publication of this report, probably by Jonathan Zane.
Case report is included in vol. 6 of Munford's Reports [p. 406-417] (Virginia Reports, vol. 20).
Only known copy was in private hands when recorded by Norona & Shetler; current location unknown; item carried caption title only, and lacked imprint or colophon. Norona & Shetler suggested a Wheeling origin for this title; yet it is just as likely that this item issued from a Richmond press, where reports on the Supreme Court of Appeals were drafted, or from a Clarksburg one, where this case was first heard; hence the indeterminacy reported here.
