Virginia Evangelical and Literary Magazine (vol. 3).
- imprint_number: 1820.041
- title: The Virginia evangelical and literary magazine, edited by John H. Rice.
- sequence_number: 41
- year: 1820
- place_issued: Richmond
- issuing_press: William W. Gray for John H. Rice
- author: Rice, John Holt (1777-1831), editor.
- notes: A reincarnation of Rice's Christian Monitor, which issued as a weekly (July 1815 to June 1816) and biweekly (September 1816 to August 1817) newspaper from various Richmond presses. This monthly magazine format proved more durable, as the periodical easily survived Rice's departure from the editorial chair at the end of 1821 (end of vol. 4), continuing until it was absorbed by Richmond's weekly Visitor and Telegraph in 1828; hence, it was the key Virginia Presbyterian periodical of the 1820s. The magazine was published under this particular title from January 1818 (vol. 1, no. 1) to December 1820 (vol. 3, no. 12).
As with the preceding issues, this third volume was published in the office of the Franklin Press; during 1820, the ownership of that office shifted from William Waller Gray to Nathan Pollard, so both men were the printers of the magazine over that year; the index and volume title page issued in December bears Pollard's imprint.
Available as part of the American Periodical Series: 1800-1850, both in microfilm and online.
