The Mountaineer (3rd edition).
- imprint_number: 1820.075
- title: The mountaineer or, A series of essays designed for the improvement of the minds of young ladies and gentlemen written chiefly by the Rev. Conrad Spece [sic].
- sequence_number: 75
- year: 1820
- place_issued: Harrisonburg
- issuing_press: Ananias Davisson
- author: Speece, Conrad (1776-1836).
- notes: Speece was a Presbyterian minister of considerable reputation in the Valley of Virginia; this title was a collection of essays he intended for the "improvement" of the youth; they first appeared in serial form in the Staunton weekly, the Republican Farmer, published by Isaac Collet from July 1813 to July 1816; the two men then collaborated on publishing a collected edition of those newspaper essays earlier in this year (1818.107). Speece joined Davisson later that year to offer an enlarged edition (1818.068) that added material to the prior ones, particularly annotating the Republican Farmer essays.
This edition carries an imprint lacking printer credit; most authorities recording this item do not offer a suggestion for its printer, noting only the earlier Staunton edition; yet as Davisson printed the second edition, which is the basis for this new edition, this item undoubtedly also issued from his press, so the attribution here.
