  Content indicates this title's publication in the summer of 1820; in May 1820, the annual meeting of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod of North Carolina debated the legality of David Henkel's ministry, already well-known for its theatrical quality; Henkel defended himself by drawing attention to other ministers who preached with the synod's approval despite not having avowed the Augsburg Confession, the central tenet of the evangelical Lutheranism that was actively promoted by the family's patriarch, Rev. Paul Henkel; when the Synod voted to disavow the younger Henkel, members of the various churches he served in North Carolina and eastern Tennessee met in July 1820 to form a new Tennessee Synod, drafting this defense of Henkel as a justification for the schism that resulted from the May meeting.
