Virginia Resident Registration
First-time Online Account
Only residents of Virginia may register for a library account online.
- Online registrations require a valid Virginia state-issued driver's license or identification card.
- Users who register online may use their email address to gain immediate remote access to the Library's subscription databases and catalog features requiring login.
- Online registrants will not receive a library card until they visit the Library in person.
- When registering online, please enter the complete Customer Identifier from your Virginia state-issued card in the ID field of the online application form below.
- Once the online application form is completed, Library staff will validate user name, address, and identification number against Virginia's DMV database to confirm Virginia residency.
- Submission of false or faulty information will result in suspension of privileges.
- Online accounts must be renewed once a year to keep the account active.

First-time Library Card
Patrons must visit the Library of Virginia in person to receive a library card. Virginia residents may pre-register for a library card on the Library of Virginia website by using their Virginia state-issued driver's license or identification card to complete the Virginia Resident Online Application Form above.
ALL patrons of the Library of Virginia must obtain a library card to:
- view books from the closed stacks
- access Archives & Manuscripts Collections Policies and Procedures
- access Special Collections and Map Collections
- make prints and photocopies
To obtain a Library of Virginia library card, patrons must:
- be 18 years of age or older*
- visit in person
- complete initial registration information
- present valid photo identification
- present proof of residence/current physical address
- have their photo taken

Notes for All Patrons:
- Failure to provide proof of current residence will result in loss of borrowing privileges. It is the patron's responsibility to inform the Library and verify changes in address or residence.
- Library cards must be renewed once a year to keep the account active.
- A fee of $5.00 is charged to replace library cards.
