Petition asking Assembly to devise Plan for Suppressing Drunkenness.
- imprint_number: 1818.132
- title: To the Senate and House of Representatives ... inhabitants of [blank] ... sheweth ... the dreadful effects of drunkenness ...
- sequence_number: 132
- year: 1818
- place_issued: Martinsburg
- issuing_press: John Alburtis
- author: Sundry Inhabitants of Berkeley County.
- notes: Item "representing the dreadful effects to society, from the prevailing vice of drunkenness … praying the General Assembly to devise some plan for suppressing that evil;" request was sent to committee, which did not report on the petition as either a bill or a resolution.
Sheet lacks colophon; only known copy, held in the state archives at the Library of Virginia, has manuscript completion of the place-blank in name of Berkeley County with date notation of December 26, 1818; the House journal does not record a similar petition from anywhere else during this session; those circumstances indicate a singular Berkeley County origin for this sobriety campaign that did not find support in neighboring counties; the only press there at this time was that of John Alburtis in Martinsburg, so the attribution here.
