- imprint_number: 1820.078
- title: The Primer, or, First book for children.
- sequence_number: 78
- year: 1820
- place_issued: New Market
- issuing_press: Solomon Henkel
- author: -----
- notes: Apparently English version of Das kleine ABC-Buch, oder Erste Anfangs-Büchlein (1816.096, 1817.081, 1819.079), though prior editions are unknown, despite the "fourth edition" notice; as with the Henkel's German language primer, the content herein has a religious focus, with the text concluding with Ten Commandments, tailored prayers, and simple hymns {p. 31-36].
One of only two titles known to bear the name of J. H. Lawton as printer working in Henkel family's press office; that brief presence suggests Lawton's employment in New Market while the remainder of the male family members attended the contentious meetings of the North Carolina Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in the summer 1820 over David Henkel's ministry, meetings that led to a schism that produced a competing Tennessee Synod.
