Virginia's WWII Story

The Library of Virginia presents Homefront to Frontline: Virginia’s WWII Story, a special exhibition and online portal commemorating the 80th anniversary of World War II. It explores the personal stories, sacrifices, and contributions of Virginians during one of the most pivotal events of the 20th century. Through archival materials, photographs, letters, and documents, we bring to life the experiences of those who served in the three branches of the military as well as those who supported the war effort at home.

As part of our ongoing efforts to preserve and share these important pieces of history, we have created this online portal to enhance access to our growing digital collections of WWII materials. Homefront to Frontline offers opportunities to explore our items, contribute to crowdsourced transcription projects, and engage in public programming designed to deepen understanding of this global conflict and its lasting impact on Virginia.

Join us in honoring the legacy of those who served by exploring the WWII collections, visiting the exhibition in the Library of Virginia, and helping preserve history for future generations.

WWII Collections

Explore the Library of Virginia’s World War II collections. Military collections highlight individual veterans and their experiences in the Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard including photos, letters, military records and accommodations. Homefront collections illustrate what the war was like for average citizens and how they were able to contribute to the war effort. Information about WWII can be found in many other archival collections by narrowing the date range, as found in the War Years Collections. These provide deeper understanding of the time period.
